Rolex Daytona Review: 116509 White Gold

Rolex Daytona 116509 Review

I've never been a fan of gold versions of sport watches, but if there's any sport watch that would make for a fantastic gold model- it's the Rolex Daytona 116509. Even the vintage yellow gold Daytonas are incredibly collectible compared to the gold Submariners or GMTs.

There's something about this watch... I'm guessing that the Daytona has always been more elegant than the Submariners or GMTs because of its smooth, polished, and domed tachometer bezel- instead of the others' large, bulky rotatable bezels with the sharp teeth for grip.

So, after considering yellow gold, rose gold, and white gold versions of the Daytona, I went for the white gold model 116509 with Silver Arabic dial. The watch is just incredible- not too flashy and every bit as heavy as the other gold pieces. The main factor for me was the deep black arabic hour markers and the matchig bezel rings- it makes it such a legible timepiece while being elegant and sporty at once.

As soon is I put it on when arriving from the jeweler, I was overwhelmed by the heft and solidity of the 18K gold vs. the usual steel Rolex Sport Models I've owned. In fact, it still amazes me every time I put it on.

Pros:

  • Gorgeous Silver Dial!
  • Terrific weight and feels super expensive/sturdy
  • A dream watch for many!
  • Unique version of a true classic chronograph

Cons:

  •  $34,000 price tag
